Guys, i am a Canadian traveling in Brasil with my 89 Defender 110. I have a 2.5TD (19J) motor. My motor was overhauled to Buenos Aires 3 weeks ago and a new turbo was installed. The turbo is from a 300tdi and was manufactured in Brasil. After 2000km the turbo has failed. Should i install another turbo for a 300tdi? If so, where can i find one?

Your turbo was not supposed to fail in such a short km. I would bet there was something wrong with the installation. Where in Brazil are you right now? So we can try finding somewhere near where you can get decent mechanic labor.

Best wishes,
Rafael

I am in Lins, SP state..I am about 450km west of SP city. I am at a very good diesel mechanic with all the specialized tools. The mechanics tell me that the closest turbo specialist is 100kms away from here.

The turbo cartridge has the words "Master Power Turbo" on it. I have been assured that this is for a 300tdi and was manufactured in Brasil. The vortex into which the turbine blades sit is a AiResearch. Because the turbo cartridge was not designed for my 19J motor, the oil hose from the engine up to the turbo was custom manufactured in Argentina when the turbo was installed.

From my inspection of the turbo i notice that the turbo is leaking alot of oil out of the exhaust manifold gasket (which tells me the turbo seals are bad), and that the turbine shaft can be moved up and down a noticeable amount. The turbine spins freely when i turn it with my fingers. It is not binding on the housing.

Landy,

the brazilian 300tdi features just "Garret" turbos, a Honeywell co. The Garret is pretty much standard and easy to source.

I heard something bad about the "Master Power". Better go to something really sturdy, like the Garret.

Good look.

Thanks everyone! just an update. My turbo housing is fine. What i need is the turbo cartridge or core for a 300tdi. That core will fit in my housing (which is not 300tdi). I had a new core installed 3 weeks ago and it has failed....i am starting to think that the failure was the result of too much oil pressure which destroyed the seals in the core. I have a few other symptoms in the motor which make me think that a oil pressure relief valve is stuck closed.

Thanks for all those distributors of turbo cartridges!!. Yes my 19J looks exactly like that engine in the video. the only difference is that i don't have that protection cover for the turbo like that guy did.
